How To Perform
- 1 Grip the bar at shoulder-width, thumbs wrapped. Bar rests on the front deltoids and upper chest.
- 2 Brace the core, squeeze the glutes. The body should be a rigid column.
- 3 Press the bar straight up, moving the head back slightly to allow the bar to pass.
- 4 At the top, the bar should be directly above the ears.
- 5 Return to shoulder height under control.
Form Cues
- ✓ Keep the bar over the middle of your foot throughout — do not let it drift forward.
- ✓ Do not lean back excessively to turn this into an incline press.
- ✓ At the top, shrug your shoulders slightly upward into the bar — this fully engages the upper traps.
Common Mistakes
- ✗ Leaning back excessively — a modest lean is fine, but excessive lean turns it into a standing incline press.
- ✗ Pressing the bar forward rather than straight up.
- ✗ Flaring the elbows out to the sides rather than slightly forward.
💡 Professor Splits Says:
Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Barbell Overhead Press, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
