How To Perform

  1. 1 Sit on an upright bench with back support. Hold dumbbells at shoulder height.
  2. 2 Elbows should be at roughly 90 degrees at the start.
  3. 3 Press the dumbbells up and slightly inward — allowing them to come close together at the top without touching.
  4. 4 Lower under control to shoulder height.

Form Cues

  • ✓ Keep your core braced — do not hyperextend the lower back as you press.
  • ✓ Do not fully lock out and rest at the top — keep tension on the deltoids.

Common Mistakes

  • ✗ Leaning back excessively against the bench — this shifts load to the upper chest.
  • ✗ Letting the dumbbells path be too wide (elbows flaring to 90 degrees from the body).
💡 Professor Splits Says:

Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Dumbbell Shoulder Press, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
