How To Perform
- 1 Set a box or bench behind you at a height that puts your thighs about parallel when seated, and position the bar on your back as for a squat.
- 2 Take a stance slightly wider than shoulder-width and brace your core.
- 3 Push your hips back and lower under control until you touch the box lightly.
- 4 Keep your torso tight, pause briefly without relaxing, then drive your feet through the floor to stand.
Form Cues
- ✓ Sit back to the box, not straight down, and keep your shins close to vertical.
- ✓ Touch the box lightly — do not drop onto it or fully unload your legs.
- ✓ Push the floor away as you rise rather than rocking your torso forward.
Common Mistakes
- ✗ Dropping onto the box and relaxing the hips and back at the bottom.
- ✗ Rocking back and then throwing the torso forward to stand.
- ✗ Choosing a box so low that the position becomes uncomfortable or compromises your back.
Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Box Squat, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
