How To Perform

  1. 1 Sit on the floor with a bench behind you. Roll the barbell over your hips — use a pad for comfort.
  2. 2 Lean your upper back against the bench edge, at the shoulder blades.
  3. 3 Drive through the heels to extend the hips upward.
  4. 4 Fully extend — squeeze the glutes hard at the top.
  5. 5 Lower under control.

Form Cues

  • ✓ At the top, your torso from shoulders to knees should be parallel to the floor.
  • ✓ Drive through the heels, not the toes.
  • ✓ Chin tucked to avoid hyperextending the neck.

Common Mistakes

  • ✗ Not reaching full hip extension — the glutes are maximally contracted at the top.
  • ✗ Allowing the back to hyperextend rather than the hips.
  • ✗ Heels too far from the body — position heels under the knees.
💡 Professor Splits Says:

Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Barbell Hip Thrust, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
