How To Perform

  1. 1 Lie on a flat bench with dumbbells held above chest, palms facing each other.
  2. 2 With a slight bend in the elbows, lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc.
  3. 3 Lower until you feel a strong chest stretch — typically when dumbbells are at chest level.
  4. 4 Return in the same arc, squeezing the chest at the top.

Form Cues

  • ✓ This is a stretching movement — do not use heavy weight.
  • ✓ Maintain the same slight elbow bend throughout — do not let the elbows straighten or bend further.

Common Mistakes

  • ✗ Using too much weight and turning it into a press.
  • ✗ Letting the elbows straighten — this shifts load to the biceps and puts the shoulder at risk.
💡 Professor Splits Says:

Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Dumbbell Fly, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
